Before embarking on the use and regulation of AI in schools, it is important for education professionals to understand the basic mechanics of machine learning and the implications of the data used to train the models. We would like to provide a brief overview of the mechanics of AI and use Google’s Teachable Machine platform to illustrate how training data can impact the outputs of AI models. Participants will have a chance to develop their own training data set, test that set, and delve into issues of bias in the data selection process and the impacts those choices have on the model’s outputs. We can also provide educators with examples of integrating ‘Teachable Machine’ into their curriculum as well as provide resources and recommendations to support this integration work for students in grades 3-8th grade.
